Oz's Baby Shower Basket

So many times in my life I have started a project well before I actually needed it to be done and then I slack off until the very last minute. It's pretty much the story of my life.

Friday after work I headed to A.C. Moore to get thread and other sewing accessories. It took me way longer than it should have to find the sewing stuff because they don't have a very big selection. I stood in the aisle looking at all the products, many of which I haven't seen nor used since middle school Home-Ec. I looked at a few "starter" kits and decided the contents looked cheap, but I ended up using them as a template of what to buy. I emerge from A.C. Moore victorious, but I was feeling crunched for time as I had to go see a friends show later that night and then the baby shower was the following afternoon at 1pm.

I was home by 6pm, which left me only 19 hours until I was suppose to be at the baby shower. I printed out instructions I found online and headed upstairs to figure out what the heck I was doing. Luckily for me Morgan was in the kitchen working on dinner, so I had someone who had actually used a sewing machine in the last 15 years and to provide moral support.

I was able to finish the pattern, which proved to be a little tricky for a side sloped basket. Next Morgan and I grabbed the instruction manual to figure out how to get started. As we read little tid-bits of sewing knowledge starting coming back to Morgan, so we were able to skip some of the reading. After I was finally ready to sew it was time to head to Fletchers to see The Mayan Factor. We arrived home from the show around 1:00am and I worked on the project a little more before hitting a wall due to not have the buttons to finish the sides.

I woke up the next morning and headed out to pick up a gift bag, buttons and a book for baby Oz (since the baby shower theme was "Adventures in Reading"). It was about 10am by the time I left the house, T-minus 3 hrs to the start of the shower. I needed to go back to White Marsh so I hit up A.C. Moore & Barnes and Noble. At the very last minute I decided to go to Walmart, since I needed a gift bag anyway I and hoping that I could maybe maybe score buttons and/or a book which would save me a least one trip. I should mention that I hate the Walmart closest to my house and that it is an absolute madhouse on the weekends. I walked in and headed to the kids books and didn't see anything I liked, so I headed over to the gift bags picked one and then moved on the the craft section for buttons and quickly found the perfect buttons. I decided to go back to the children's books and as I stood there staring at the same books that didn't interested me just 15 minutes before, I saw a green book jacket peaking out behind the other books. I reached for and as I suspected it was exactly what I was looking for, The Giving Tree. I made my purchase and raced home.

It was 11:30am, T-minus 1.5 hrs to the start of the shower. I began to sew the the ribbons and buttons on to the corners. Morgan provided an extra hand because it was tricky to line up the button, ribbon and fabric all while holding the foot in its' highest postion. We were able to finish the basket by 12:45pm and I believe it turned out really good for my first sewing project since middle school.

Shane ended up getting stuck on a work call, so I had a little more time left to be crafty. I put together a book dedication/book mark for Oz. I can't bring myself to write in a book so it serves both purposes.

The Begining

About a month ago I was on a trip to Walmart & Target with a few friends, Kathy (BF since High School) and Morgan (BF/Future Sister-in-Law/ Roommate). The purpose of our mission was for Kathy to buy gifts for an upcoming baby shower. Morgan and I tagged along for moral support. I also had two upcoming baby showers and I figured I would get a head start on gift buying. I hate when you are buying gifts off of an already picked-over registry. You always get stuck buying lame, but practical stuff like q-tips and Desitin. This time I was in luck because I had just received the one invite earlier that day and the other hadn't even been officially announced.

Walmart was our first stop and while Kathy perused the baby aisle, Morgan and I walked the craft section because neither of my mommas-to-be were registered there. As we walked Morgan and I talked about all the crafty stuff we wished we did. Morgan and I both the kind of people who are dreamers and schemers , in fact many of our conversations start with "I think it would be cool if........". We both also can't stand to not be busy, so we tend to work well together.

So while we were in the craft section, I came upon some baskets and I mentioned I thought it would be cute if I bought some fabric and made a baby-themed basket liners to put the baby shower gifts in. Morgan enthusiastically agreed and we began looking for the right fabric. I knew I didn't want something too babyish and eventually found a cute pattern with frogs on it. I explained the plan to the lady working the fabric cutting table and she helped me figure out how much I needed. I ended up purchasing 3 yards of frog fabric, 2 baskets, 1 roll of ribbon and a roll of batting. The following day I asked my friend Nathan if he would be willing to sew the project together for me if I got it all pinned together, since I didn't own a sewing machine.

Flash-forward a few weeks later and I decided I should just go ahead and buy a sewing machine, because there are so many times having one would have come in handy. So I spent some time talking to Nathan about his machine and some features I should look for. I eventually settled on this:

The Brother LS-2125. I looked around and find one of Ebay for a decent price and within a few days my very first sewing machine arrived.
